PUBLIC SPEAKING: Body Language Basics - What You Say Without Speaking
Body Language Basics - What You Say Without Speaking
When you speak, your audience doesn't just listen to your words, they watch you. In fact, studies suggest that over 60% of communication is nonverbal. If your gestures, posture, and expressions don’t align with your message, people won’t believe what you say! No matter how good your speech is!
Here’s how to use body language intentionally to become a more powerful speaker:
1. Posture: Your First Statement!
Stand tall. Imagine a string pulling you upward from your head. A strong posture communicates confidence, even if you're nervous inside. Practice standing confidently even before you open your mouth.
2. Eye Contact: Connection, Not Staring!
Eye contact shows trustworthiness and helps keep the audience engaged. Avoid looking at the ceiling, your notes, or the back wall too much. When they feel seen, they’ll listen more deeply!
3. Gestures: Make Your Words Visual!
Use natural hand movements to emphasize your points. Avoid keeping your hands in your pockets or folding them too tightly. Too much movement distracts — too little feels stiff. Aim for purposeful gestures!
4. Facial Expressions: Match the Emotion!
Smile when appropriate, frown when expressing concern. Your face must match your tone. Avoid a blank or overly serious face throughout your speech. It creates emotional distance. Your face is a mirror of your message. Use it wisely!
5. Movement: Own the Stage, Don’t Pace!
Moving with purpose can keep energy high and draw people in. Don’t wander randomly, instead, walk to emphasize a new idea or connect with a new part of the audience.
REMEMBER:
Your body is part of your message. The moment you walk onto the stage, you’re already speaking, even if you haven’t said a word!
Record a short speech. Watch it without sound. What your body saying?
