PUBLIC SPEAKING: Connecting with Listeners - Speak To Them, Not At Them
Connecting with Listeners - Speak To Them, Not At Them
Great speakers don't just talk, they connect. And connection begins with empathy.
Here’s how to speak to your audience, not at them:
Before you step up to speak, take time to learn who you're speaking to. What do they care about? What are their fears, interests, dreams? Your message should meet them where they are.
Involve them mentally by asking things like:
"Have you ever felt like giving up?" or "What would you do if this happened to you?"
It invites reflection and pulls them in.
Shift from “Let me tell you…” to “You can benefit from…”
Your focus should be on serving them, not showing off.
Even in formal talks, look for ways to create a sense of dialogue. Invite comments, pause for reactions, or tell stories that reflect shared experiences.
REMEMBER:
People may forget your facts, but they’ll remember how your words made them feel. Connection is what transforms a good talk into a great one.
