PUBLIC SPEAKING: Handling Mistakes While Speaking - Recover, Refocus, and Continue

Handling Mistakes While Speaking - Recover, Refocus, and Continue

Mistakes happen; even to the best speakers. You might forget a word, mispronounce a name, lose your train of thought, or click the wrong slide!
The difference between an amateur and a professional speaker is not whether mistakes occur… it’s how you handle them.
Here’s how to Recover, Refocus, and Continue:
1️⃣ Pause and Breathe
When you stumble, avoid panicking. Simply pause for a second, take a deep breath, and allow your mind to reset. Silence can be powerful, it gives you time to think without looking nervous.
2️⃣ Acknowledge Lightly (If necessary)
If the mistake is noticeable to the audience, acknowledge it briefly with a smile or light comment, then move on.
Example: “Let me rephrase that…” or “Looks like my slide wanted to surprise us!”
3️⃣ Refocus on Your Main Point
Don’t dwell on the error. Bring your attention back to your message or story. Your audience is more interested in your ideas than in your slip-up.
4️⃣ Use Recovery Phrases
Have ready-made phrases to get back on track:
“As I was saying…”
“Let’s look at this from another angle…”
“The key takeaway here is…”
5️⃣ Maintain Positive Body Language
Keep your posture open and confident. If your body language remains strong, most people won’t even notice you made a mistake.
6️⃣ Practice Recovery in Rehearsals
When preparing your speech, deliberately insert small “mistakes” and practice how you would recover. This builds confidence for real situations.
REMEMBER:
Your audience doesn’t expect perfection; they expect connection. Handling mistakes gracefully can actually make you appear more relatable and authentic.
